Young Horse Trainers’ School – June 10 – 15, 2014

The last 10 days have reconnected me to my passionate love of all things horse in a wonderfully healing way. The first step was committing to showing up. The next was being open to opportunity. Then the riches poured my way beyond my wildest dreams.

I attended the Young Jumper Trainers’ School taught by Linda Allen , Kelly McKnight and Jose Alejos. The clinic took place at Diann Langer’s Red TopFarm. The farm was impeccable and the entire team at Red Top Farm contributed to our fabulous experience. Terry Bucher was the most generous host, going above and beyond, and actually lending her amazing young prospects to the cause.

This clinic, designed in part to bring together like minded people interested in the development of the young horse, did not disappoint. Under the guidance of these three, incredibly talented horsemen, we explored a gentle process by which we could bring out the best in these young prospects by encouraging a positive attitude and offering a solid foundation. Linda’s vision was a beacon of light guiding the way. This clinic, and programs like it, are just what the industry needs in order to address the growing problem of equestrian enthusiasts, both professional and amateur, learning and teaching to ride for the sole purpose of winning, as opposed to learning and teaching to ride with the goal of developing one’s horsemanship and truly exploring the art of training.

I left the clinic and headed to my dear friend JP Giacomini and his wife Shelley’s Baroque Farm in Kentucky. JP and Shelley breed Lusitanos, but most importantly, JP is one of the best trainers of a horse that I have ever worked with. His vast knowledge of the history of the sport, combined with his thorough understanding of biomechanics, and his diligent, studious, and lifelong exploration into the art of Dressage is inspiring to say the least. I watched him and his assistant teach a 5 year old to passage in 2 rides. He bred and trained his Grand Prix horse Orion, who rivals the best in the sport. Such a privilege to watch this pair working together. I saw 3, 4, and 5 year old and older horses, all with the same confidence and willing disposition.

There are no words to express how grateful and thankful I am to have had these experiences. My family, friends and clients have been so supportive of me in my pursuits. I am in awe of the incredible horsemen who have generously agreed to give of themselves in order to make things better for the horse. Linda, Jose, Kelly, and JP all selflessly sharing their years of experience and study, answering an endless barrage of questions. I know that any horse I have the privilege of riding from here on out, will benefit from your dedication to the sport and your generosity of spirit. A million thanks for this new beginning! #youngjumpers
